LEARNING ABOUT BIRDS THROUGH
A LIFETIME

Sept. 15-Nov.1

charcoal, felt pen, ink, acrylic, and
photocopies of artist's original drawings
LEARNING ABOUT BIRDS EARLY ON....
492 Gosling
paper on posterboard
32 x 40"
BABY BOOKS SHOW BABY BIRDS
-- Hans Christian Andersen's Ugly Duckling
first appeared in English in 1846. In the
147 years since, many ducklings, chicks, and
goslings --such as the one depicted here --
have been featured in books read to young
children.
493 Big Bird
paper on posterboard
32 x 40"
BIG BIRD TEACHES WORDS
-- A generation of children graduated from
picture books to reading and writing with
the help of Sesame Street's Big Bird.
LEARNING ABOUT BIRDS LATER....
494 Dinosaur And Chicken
paper on posterboard
32 x 40"
ELEMENTARY BOOKS INTRODUCE
EVOLUTION
--At first it may not be apparent why birds
are often called 'feathered dinosaurs,' but
with feathers plucked, chicken of today look
surprisingly similar to Compsognathus of
140 million years ago.
LEARNING ABOUT BIRDS THROUGH
DRAWINGS....
495 Clapper Rail And Pepsi
paper on posterboard
32 40"
REMINDERS ABOUT POLLUTION
-- Have you ever wondered why you see
famous faces hyping the taste of soft drinks
but not the recycling of bottles and cans?
ORNITHOLOGY AND BIRD LIFE
Yellow-billed Cuckoo and DNA
paper on posterboard
32 x 40"
DNA AND PROTECTION
-- Biologists use DNA analysis to identify
individuals, populations, subspecies, and
species, which help determine how rare
or common birds are. Here, the
Yellow-billed Cuckoo, which has already
disappeared from Washington and Oregon,
and is now disappearing from California,
is considered genetically too similar to
forms found in the eastern United States
to qualify for federal protection.
Hooded Warbler and Migration Map
paper on posterboard
32 x 40"
MIGRATION AND PROTECTED HABITATS
-- It is not enough to provide protection
on for the summer home of a migrating
species if its winter home remains in
jeopardy, and vice versa. The species must
be protected throughout its entire range --
including stopover areas along its
migration route.
CONSERVATION AND BIRD PROTECTION
FUND-RAISING TO HELP BIRDS
Bald Eagle and Fund-raising
paper on posterboard
32 x 40"
THE COST OF PROTECTION
-- If all birds in jeopardy received the
attention and money earmarked for
the national symbol of the United States,
we could spend less time worrying about
the birds and and more time watching
them.

496 California Scrub Jay and Binoculars
paper on posterboard
32 x 40"
TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT YOUR
NEIGHBOR
-- Consider the California Scrub Jay. Have
you ever wondered why they don't sing?...
Why their plumage includes a blue
"necklace"...If they prefer green or brown
acorns...If they sleep in the day time...
Why they hop.... What encourages a
mockingbird to mimic their call. If
California Scrub Jays live near you, take a
closer look at these neighbors.
497 Western Tanager, Research and
Bird Counts
paper on posterboard
32 x 40"
PARTICIPATING IN A BIRD COUNT
-- Research suggests that numerous forests
are being fragmented into pieces so small
that many migrating birds that rely on them
can no longer breed successfully in various
traditional sites.
In a project that extends across America,
volunteers have been counting the
number of tanagers found four differently
sized forests. Their data will help biologists
refine our understanding of breeding
requirements.
LEARNING MORE ABOUT BIRDS
THROUGH THE ARTS
PRODUCTS THAT REFER TO BIRDS
-- You can help bring attention to
the importance of protecting bird habitats.
You can also help bring attention to local
bird conservation efforts. One way to help
is buying or producing products that
feature birds in a meaningful way that
others can buy. Here, for example, are
three I produced to help the Aleut and
Yupik people of Alaska encourage
ecotourism:
T-shirt: Birds of St. Lawrence Island
Poster: Birds of St. Lawrence Island
Poster: Birds of the Pribilofs and
Aleutian Islands
498 Rafael's Angels And Warbler
paper on posterboard
32 x 40"
LOOKING FOR THE UNEXPECTED IN ART
-- When Raphael painted the Sistine Madonna
in 1513, he included these two angels as small
details. The angels, if not the entire master-
piece, have become especially popular. I
added the bird.
Take time to notice birds on display --
whether in classical art or contemporary
cartoons or advertising; whether in next year's
Duck Stamp or the next creature that
insurance companies select as their icon;
whether it's the next version of the NBC
peacock or the next version of the United
States Postal Service's Bald Eagle.
FINDING OUT WHICH BIRDS NEED HELP
Did you know that around the world about 900 birds are recognized
as threatened or endangered including about 40 birds the continental
United States and another 30 in Hawaii?
If you didn't know this, don't you wonder why not?
